Key Credentialing Terms
What is credentialing?
Credentialing is the process where the insurance company reviews the provider's background and determines if they can safely and legally provide care and meet the standards set by the insurance company.
What is contracting?
Contracting refers to the process of reviewing and signing the contract between the insurance company and the provider.
What is an NPI?
NPI stands for National Provider Identifier. It is number used to identify the provider for billing and Electronic Health Records.
What is a TIN?
TIN stands for Tax Identification Number. It is a number given to your business by the IRS. It is used for tax purposes.
What is CAQH?
CAQH stands for Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare. This portal collects providers' information for purposes of insurance credentialing. Your unique CAQH identification number will allow insurance companies to access your personal information.
How does our process work?
There are a number of things you will need to do before you begin the credentialing process.
You will need to obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI), Tax Identification Number (TIN), and an Identification Number from the Council for Afforadable Quality Healthcare (CAQH).
We can do the above processes for you.
You will also need to buy Professional Liability Insurance.
A business bank account will be required to process reimbursements from the insurance companies.
Once the pre-credentialing steps are done, you will fill out a form with your demographic, educational, and business information. Once we receive the form we will begin the application process for all of the insurances with which you would like to contract. This part should take just a few days.
After this, we wait for the insurance companies to process the applications. The processing time varies depending on the insurance. Some may take two weeks, while others can take up to a few months.
